Coronal Hole Detection and Open Magnetic Flux

چکیده

Many scientists use coronal hole (CH) detections to infer open magnetic flux. Detection techniques differ in the areas that they assign as open, and may obtain different values for We characterize uncertainties of these methods, by applying six detection methods deduce area flux a near-disk center CH observed on 9/19/2010, single method five EUV filtergrams this CH. Open was calculated using maps. The standard deviation (interpreted uncertainty) estimate about 26%. However, including variability data sources, uncertainty almost doubles 45%. two all CHs time period. find is greatly underestimated compared inferred from in-situ measurements (by 2.2-4 times). also test our simulated emission images thermodynamic MHD model solar corona. overestimate CH, but average error only 7%. full-Sun corona underestimate flux, factors well below what needed account missing observations. Magnetic Flux Cancellation and Coronal Magnetic Energy

I investigate the processes at work in the cancellation of normal magnetic flux in solar magnetograms and study the relationships between cancellation and the budget of free magnetic energy in the coronal magnetic field that can power solar flares and CMEs. After defining cancellation mathematically, I derive equations that quantify the evolution of free magnetic energy in response to arbitrary...

Coronal and heliospheric magnetic flux circulation and its relation to open solar flux evolution

Solar cycle 24 is notable for three features that can be found in previous cycles but which have been unusually prominent: (1) sunspot activity was considerably greater in the northern/southern hemisphere during the rising/declining phase; (2) accumulation of open solar flux (OSF) during the rising phase was modest, but rapid in the early declining phase; (3) the heliospheric current sheet (HCS...

Comparison of Magnetic Flux Distribution between a Coronal Hole and a Quiet Region

Employing Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) deep magnetograms and Hα images in a quiet region and a coronal hole, observed on September 14 and 16, 2004, respectively, we have explored the magnetic flux emergence, disappearance and distribution in the two regions. The following results are obtained: (1) The evolution of magnetic flux in the quiet region is much faster than that in the coronal ho...

Distribution and properties of open magnetic flux outside of coronal holes

[1] The open magnetic flux of the Sun, the component of the solar magnetic field that forms the heliospheric magnetic field, is known to be concentrated into coronal holes, regions of low plasma density where the solar wind escapes easily. There also is evidence for concentrations of open flux in the vicinity of active regions. In this paper we explore the possibility that there is an additiona...

Coronal mass ejections and magnetic flux buildup in the heliosphere

[1] To test for magnetic flux buildup in the heliosphere from coronal mass ejections (CMEs), we simulate heliospheric flux as a constant background open flux with a time-varying interplanetary CME (ICME) contribution. As flux carried by ejecta can only contribute to the heliospheric flux budget while it remains closed, the ICME flux opening rate is an important factor. Two separate forms for th...
